Ruchika Verma

Machine Learning Scientist, Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (AMII)

Role: Scientist

Site: CDL-Rockies

Stream: Prime

Ruchika is an Associate Machine Learning Scientist with the Industry team at the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii). Before joining the Industry team, she completed an internship with the advanced tech team where she worked on developing machine learning solutions to predict mRNA expression levels of Canadian protein crops directly from their DNA sequences. The project was in collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada. Ruchika’s research interests include machine learning, deep learning, medical image analysis and computational pathology.

Prior to joining Amii, she has applied machine learning algorithms to address various challenges in evidence-based personalized oncology such as tumor detection, generalized nuclei segmentation, survival, and treatment outcome prediction for cancer patients. She completed her PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA and received the Outstanding Graduate Career Award for her PhD work that recognizes overall excellence – from performing outstanding research to publishing high-quality manuscripts to demonstrating leadership.

She co-organized two international competitions on computational pathology focused on nuclei segmentation and classification. She also did academic internships at UCSF and UAlberta. Previously, she completed her masters and undergraduate (with distinction) studies in Electronics and Communication Engineering with specialization in digital signal processing and machine learning. She has also served as an instructor for 2 years in NIT Meghalaya, which is an institute of national importance funded by the Government of India.
