Peter Pronovost, MD, PhD, FCCM, is a prominent patient safety advocate, physician executive, critical care physician, and researcher with over 1000 peer-reviewed publications. He’s known for his groundbreaking use of checklists to significantly reduce central line-associated bloodstream infections, saving thousands of lives and reducing infection rates by 80%. His work earned him national recognition, including being named one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people and receiving a MacArthur Foundation “genius grant.”
As Chief Clinical Transformation Officer at University Hospitals Health System and Professor at Case Western Reserve University, Pronovost developed a system that significantly cut Medicare patient care costs by 30% over three years, enhancing quality. In 2022, his leadership helped University Hospitals win the American Hospital Association’s Quest for Quality award. Appointed the Veale Distinguished Chair in Leadership and Clinical Transformation in 2023, he’s contributed to health policy at the highest levels, including co-chairing the Healthcare Quality Summit in response to a White House Executive Order and serving on advisory groups for patient safety.
Previously, he was Senior Vice President for Patient Safety and Quality at Johns Hopkins and founded the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality. A National Academy of Medicine member since 2011, Pronovost advises the WHO and Congress on patient safety, and has founded health technology companies like VisICU and Doctella. Today, he’s recognized as a leading health care executive and innovator.
