Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) is a not-for-profit startup program that combines computer science and economic design. CDL supports startups building new infrastructure and applications using blockchain technologies via a dedicated Blockchain stream. The design of the Blockchain stream is predicated on academic research in market formation and payments and successful entrepreneurs such as Sally Daub, Anthony Lacavera, Ben Goertzel, William Tunstall-Pedoe, Richard D. Titus and Boris Wertz.
On June 18, 2019, CDL announced its participation as a Founding Partner of the Diem Association. Diem is a simple global currency and financial infrastructure that can empower billions of people. Diem will be built on a secure, scalable, and reliable blockchain which will be open for developers and businesses to build inclusive new financial service products for people all around the world. It represents a new and economically significant opportunity for startup entrepreneurs interested in massive scaling.
CDL is the sole academic Founding Partner of Diem at this time.

CDL’s Chief Economist, Professor Joshua Gans, shares why CDL joined the Diem Association here.
Effective immediately, Diem will become a part of the technical training program for our Blockchain startups. While there is no requirement to work on Diem, CDL will work with key personnel within Diem to develop materials for understanding and utilizing this new opportunity. The Diem code will be open-sourced and available to all with a testnet that will help gather feedback from the community about the direction of the project and work towards ensuring a scalable, reliable, and secure launch.
