Steve Slater has over 35 years of experience in biotechnology, both in industry and academics. He received a Ph.D. in Molecular Microbiology from Case Western Reserve University and was an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University. He then spent ten years with Monsanto company as a senior scientist focused on metabolic engineering of microbes and agricultural crops and was appointed a Senior Monsanto Fellow. He was also an internal expert on climate issues, particularly in the agricultural space. He spent the next ten years in academia, first at Arizona State University (Associate Professor) and then at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he managed a large center focused on cellulosic biofuels. Since 2014, he has focused on biotech startups as a founder in CSO and CEO roles and has been an independent advisor to many companies in the industry.
