Leonid Chindelevitch

Lecturer in Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Imperial College London

Role: Scientist

Site: CDL-Berlin

Stream: Health

Leonid Chindelevitch did his undergraduate studies in Mathematics and Computer Science at McGill University and then continued on to a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics at MIT, specializing in computational biology. After a year-long position at Pfizer, he left to start his own company, focused on algorithmic approaches to pharmacogenomics, while also doing research at the Centre for Human Genetics at the Massachusetts General Hospital. The company ended up folding after two years, but the experience generated many valuable lessons.

This foray into entrepreneurship was followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Harvard School of Public Health, and a faculty position at the School of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. He recently completed a virtual sabbatical at Pfizer and, after relocating to the UK, will be starting a new position at the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at Imperial College, London in September 2020. He has also consulted with a number of organizations including the World Health Organization, the Clinton Health Access Initiative, and CSD Labs, among others.

Leonid’s expertise lies in computational biology, mathematical modeling, and machine learning. While his primary research interest is in infectious diseases, he maintains a broad interest in all areas of healthcare, from basic science to the business side and policy.
