Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) has joined Ocean Visions (OV) as a partner, and among other activities, will provide support to the OV Launchpad designed to help teams pursuing ocean-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) pathways compete for the $100M XPRIZE Carbon Removal. The Ocean Visions Launchpad will field technical advisory teams, including CDL Ocean mentors, to provide ongoing technical advice and support over 12-24 months, without charge, to help the selected competitors improve their technologies and maximize their chances of winning the prize.  CDL Oceans will support Launchpad teams as an Acceleration & Impact partner with strategies for scale-up, financing, partnerships, IP protection, and go-to-market plans.  The application process is open to innovators anywhere in the world competing with an ocean-based CDR pathway.

“CDL Oceans is thrilled to partner with Ocean Visions and to support teams developing ocean-based carbon removal solutions as part of the $100M XPRIZE Carbon Removal, which aligns directly with our mission to accelerate the commercialization of science for the betterment of humankind,” says Jeff Larsen, Site Lead for CDL-Atlantic and Assistant Vice-President of innovation and Entrepreneurship at Dalhousie University.

“We’re excited to welcome Creative Destruction Lab as a partner,” says Ocean Visions Executive Director and Chief Innovation Officer Brad Ack. “Their expertise will help selected Launchpad competitors enhance their ocean-based CDR technologies.”

Funded by the Musk Foundation, the $100M XPRIZE Carbon Removal competition is the largest, most audacious incentive prize in human history. To win the five-year competition, teams must demonstrate solutions at scale that permanently remove carbon dioxide and reduce the impact of climate change. After one-year of competition the judges will review all submissions and award up to 15 Milestone Prizes of $1M each.  The Ocean Visions Launchpad, supported by CDL Oceans, will be unique to ocean-based carbon removal innovations and technologies who will compete with others for the Carbon Removal prize.

About ocean-based carbon dioxide removal

Removing legacy carbon pollution from our atmosphere and our ocean is critical to slow and ultimately reverse the climate crisis.  The question now is where will we get the massive quantities of carbon removal needed.  The oceans have tremendous potential to be part of that answer.  However, most carbon removal technologies and approaches have focused on land-based solutions to date.   The ocean holds enormous potential for some of these CDR solutions, given its sheer size and natural ability to sequester large quantities of carbon, but ocean-based carbon removal remains poorly understood and greatly underinvested.  The Ocean Visions Launchpad is designed to give ocean-based technologies support to further develop and test their technology.

About Ocean Visions

Oceans Vision brings together leading oceanographic research and academic institutions with private sector and public-interest organizations to design and advance solutions to the growing threats to our ocean. We are committed to reversing the climate crisis in the ocean, increasing the resilience of coastal systems and communities to climate impacts, and building a climate-resilient aquatic food system. About CDL Oceans

Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) is a nonprofit organization that delivers an objectives-based mentorship program for massively scalable, seed-stage, science- and technology-based companies. CDL’s objective-setting process enhances the performance of technical founders who learn from the insights of experienced entrepreneurs and investigators, increasing their probability of success.

As a specialized stream, CDL Oceans operates from CDL-Atlantic at Dalhousie University.  CDL Oceans focuses on ventures disrupting the ocean economy driven by the massive urgency and opportunity of climate and ocean sustainability imperatives.  Innovative businesses will be the primary catalyst and solution to the world’s largest ocean sustainability problems. The Oceans stream focuses on emerging technologies including underwater sensors, autonomous drones, big data, bioresources, materials, artificial intelligence (AI), and predictive analytics.

CDL operates five sites in Canada, three in the United States and two in Europe. Launched in 2012 at the Rotman School of Management at University of Toronto, the program has now expanded with locations in Oxford (Saïd Business School, University of Oxford), Paris (HEC Paris), Atlanta (Scheller College of Business, Georgia Institute of Technology), Madison (Wisconsin School of Business, University of Wisconsin-Madison), Seattle (University of Washington, Foster School of Business), Vancouver (Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia), Montreal (HEC Montréal), Calgary (Haskayne School of Business, University of Calgary), and Halifax (Rowe School of Business, Dalhousie University).
